When a web search is performed on a keyword the search engines will look at your web page content, the name of the file containing the content, and the name of the directory. This is why it is important to keep this in mind when you are starting out from the beginning. Know your main keywords that will give you hits on search engines. At the bare minimum don't name files and directories with numbers and letters that don't have any meaning.

In case you are confused about what a search engine keyword, we will define. A keyword is the word people will type into a search engine text box before they perform the search, for example if you were looking for the definition of domain names, you would type in define domain name, that is your keyword. If you have a website with this as the name of the file and directory along with good content it would have a higher ranking then a file named "temp1.html". Hopefully this makes sense and you will keep in mind during your website structure creation.

The root website file you will not need to give a unique name. The root file is the main page that comes up when you go to a website by just typing in the domain name. For example when you go to yahoo search there will not be a file name, just the domain name. The file is there, it just does not get displayed in the URL by the internet browser. The root file for any directory is usually named index.html.
